THE MERCEDES SHOW
••On-CAMERA••
TAPING/PRE•RECORDED
MERCEDES: I think this is the sit down of all sit downs that I’ve ever experienced doing this show. Tonight I will bring two friends who on the outside hang a wonderful friendship but on the inside we’re struggling with pain between the both of them.
Mercedes smiles staring into the camera.
MERCEDES: Tonight it’ll just be us three, no studio audience, no production. Just me and my two guests tonight. I will be joined by London Carter and Y’layna Bryant both who are Co-Producers of MIL’s hit reality show #theLIFE and best friends for 10+ years. In any relationship whether as a couple or even as friends things always tend to happen that could cause friction and tonight these two will open up and share any hurt or pain they have towards each other.
BACKSTAGE
The scene cuts backstage to where London is shown in his dressing room still getting ready.
LONDON CARTER-KING: Yea I’m a little nervous, I haven’t seen Y’layna in a long time and we’ve talked on the phone here and there but I know tonight it’ll probably be difficult for the both of us.
London sighs.
LONDON CARTER-KING: But that’s my girl and we go through our shit but I’m here for her. I just hope she tells the truth tonight, that’s all.
The scene cuts back onstage with Mercedes
MERCEDES: These two have gone back and forth with each other for the longest and tonight these two will finally put to bed any drama that has ever caused them any issues in their friendship. We’ll also discuss what’s going on in their personal lives, so ladies and gentleman at home I hope y’all are ready.
BACKSTAGE
Y’layna is shown seated in her makeup chair, getting touched up.
Y’LAYNA BRYANT: This has been a long time coming baby. I'm definitely trying to go into this with a very open mind. There's definitely a lot of scars I'm sure on both sides.
She sighs
Y’LAYNA BRYANT: But it's been time. For real.
The scene cuts back to Mercedes.
MERCEDES: Everyone please welcome Y’layna Bryant and London Carter.
Both Y’layna and London walk out on set greeting Mercedes, the two sit opposite from each other and Mercedes embraces them both with hello.
MERCEDES: I know you both are nervous, talking to you guys backstage when you both arrived it looked like you were.
LONDON CARTER-KING: I feel like even though we’re in a good place now, opening up old wounds can cause problems. I just hope we can leave today on good terms because a lot of the issues we have with each other we disagree on.
Y’LAYNA BRYANT: Definitely. I mean like he said. It's gonna be like reliving everything all over again. But I'm hopeful.
She smiles
MERCEDES: You two have been friends 10+ years, can you give us a background on how you two met?
LONDON CARTER-KING: It was in college, well kind of before. I knew of her through a mutual friend but the fact we ended up at the same school we just kind of clicked. We knew of each other and we just started hanging out from there and our relationship just kind of grew.
MERCEDES: Did you two ever date?
LONDON CARTER-KING: Nah, I was dating men at that point and she knew I was gay. We always complemented each other and maybe playfully flirted but it was never anything serious.
Y’layna chuckles
Y’LAYNA BRYANT: It's so funny because he wasn't always the most open person. So he didn't run around screaming it to the rooftops that he was gay. I was dating this guy my freshman year. And he just knew that me and London were more than friends.
MERCEDES: What was your first ever argument?
LONDON CARTER-KING: That’s the thing we never really had an argument. We hung out but during school we both were serious when it came to our school work. I don’t think issues started happening until we went into business together.
MERCEDES: And that was with #theLIFE?
LONDON CARTER-KING: Yes and then of course MIL Network.
MERCEDES: Tell me about how #theLIFE came about?
LONDON CARTER-KING: I’ll let Y’layna answer this one but I’ll just say one day we were sitting in the car and we were actually smoking. (London laughs) and we just brought it up.
Y’LAYNA BRYANT: I would definitely say he was more of the brains behind the whole thing. To be honest I had never thought about being in production. My passion has always been in management. But you know when you're smoking with your friends yall come up with the craziest ideas but never actually do them? We actually ran with it. He had the connections in the scene and i had the connects in the industry so it seemed to be the perfect match.
LONDON CARTER-KING: And it was never planned for me to be on the show, but since a lot of cast wasn’t wasn’t famous they kind of needed someone with status to lead the show. My role was suppose to be short but it ended up up playing a big role on the show.
MERCEDES: During the time of when the first season aired I think that’s when you guys starting having problems.
LONDON CARTER-KING: I just didn’t like the direction of the show, I wanted something different for the show while on the other hand production wanted something else. I felt like because I was casted on the show, my opinion didn’t matter.
MERCEDES: I remember when I think Levi Bryant joined though show, oh btw Y’layna any relations to Levi?
Y’layna chuckles
MERCEDES: But anyway, when Levi joined the show I remember London tweeting something about Y’layna setting him up and interfering in your struggling relationship at the time, you guys went back and forth for awhile regarding that situation so can you explain what really happened?
LONDON CARTER-KING: That time was rough for me and we weren’t even discussing bringing the show back because after the 2nd season was cancelled I didn’t think the show was ever going to come back. Once we decided to do the show again, I signed on. I think we were only what a month into filming and next thing I know Levi is on the show, this is where it gets fucked up. Y’layna knew that Anthony slept with Levi, there’s no way Production knew what was going on. Carlos told Y’layna that him and Levi were dating and Y’layna gave Levi a contract. She knew that I was in bad situation with Anthony so I didn’t understand why she felt the need to bring him on the show and then air out my business.
Y’LAYNA BRYANT: This is where we can never agree. London will sit and tell everyone that he was snubbed or shut out, but London had the freedom to cast people as he saw fit as you saw as the show went on. I was definitely more involved first season, but by the time the second season came around, i became more off a signature than anything. Reality t.v. production again has never been my dream. But the show got a great response. So i called in the help of some people that were more in this avenue. Did they do things to increase ratings. Of course. Who doesn't. But at no point did I give him a contract. I met him when we started promoting the show. And during this time, not once did he come to me with the issue. Why? Because London likes to hide everything away and pretend everything is, perfect until he loses control.
MERCEDES: So are you saying no one knew that you and Anthony were having issues?
LONDON CARTER-KING: No one knew until the show aired, at that point I felt like I was forced into something I didn’t agree on. I understand this is reality but we had an understanding.
MERCEDES: Was this during the time you aired out Ylayna’s abortion?
LONDON CARTER-KING: Wow, I’ve apologized for that and we’ve moved forward.
Y’layna looks around the room confused mumbling “WHEN”.
LONDON CARTER-KING: Oh I did, so you can sit there and mumble all you want. I won’t apologize again!
Y’LAYNA BRYANT: Baby i don't expect you to because all you think about is you. It's always been that way. I wouldn't expect him to take responsibilities for his actions. He never does.
MERCEDES: But it did happen London and you know I love you, but you did air out something very personal.
Y’LAYNA BRYANT: Look, I agreed to do this, but only if we were going to be real. I'm not about to sit here and keep being lied on
MERCEDES: Lied?
Y’LAYNA BRYANT: Yes lied. I'm tired of this miss america shit. You are wrong! You've been wrong! I've only moved one because trying to get him to see his wrong is like beating a dead horse.
LONDON CARTER-KING: That’s her escape line when she can’t take the heat.
MERCEDES: I mean that heat was personal, it was deep.
LONDON CARTER-KING: But is my life not personal? Do you understand how many times I have felt like this woman has set me up in situations that I didn’t need to be in and I’m her friend. We built that show together and I felt like throughout the two seasons we had issues she tried to make me look like a fool. I didn’t have power in who we can hire or fire for the show, I can give input but my word isn’t the final say so.
MERCEDES: And Y’layna’s is?
LONDON CARTER-KING: The board, production, and Y’layna give final say on who they want on the show, so go figure. If you knew I had an issue with Carlos back from season 1 and then an issue with Levi season 2 why continue to put me in those situations and then threaten contract negotiations when I decide that I don’t participate.
MERCEDES: So wait Y’layna threatened to sue you if you didn’t film?
LONDON CARTER-KING: I won’t say all of that, but I will say she isn’t as innocent as she wants to sit and portray that she is.
Y’LAYNA BRYANT: I absolutely did. And I meant it. And i would never take it back. London knows me well. I have always separated business from my personal life. Him not holding up to a contract that he WILLINGLY signed, refills in what? Breach of contract. So….?
LONDON CARTER-KING: And that’s garbage talk, you don’t use your friends as a pawn for a check. But again as she said this is something we will continue to disagree on, all I know is if the situation was reversed I would have handled it differently and in a more friendly and mature manner.
MERCEDES: But she’s saying she didn’t really have say on who was coming to the show either?
LONDON CARTER-KING: Check the credits, it doesn’t only have my name on there but it also has YL Management. She wants to pretend as though she doesn’t but she does and she could have tried to sue, but baby I studied law and that’s what I do so trust I would have fought that.
Y’LAYNA BRYANT: And lost! You signed a contract. Its that simple. People work together all the time that can't stand each other. That's life. You don't wanna, work with people you don't likes, be the boss! You know why i can choose who i dio or don't work with? Because instead of featuring fake drama and this tired miss america act. I built my company from the ground up. Failed or not. Because i already know he's gonna try it. It's mine! Those are the types of business moves you make. That way you don't have to deal with people you don't like.
LONDON CARTER-KING: I wouldn’t have lost anything because it’s always ways around a contract Ms. Bryant and even you should know that, you’ve dealt with some faulty ones in your past I’m sure being the businesswoman that you are.
London chuckles sarcastically.
MERCEDES: I can tell this topic is making you guys a little uneasy or maybe even angry.
LONDON CARTER-KING: Because I hate that she plays victim to this whole scenario that’s beside the point though.
MERCEDES: Why did you feel it was okay to air out the abortion though? Was it payback for what happened during the show?
LONDON CARTER-KING: Y’layna is good at playing a devil in disguise, she does her dirt and turns into an angel after the fact. She wants to portray this good girl image but baby we all have flaws and it’s okay to meet them. I was angry at the time and it was an outburst that I have again already apologized and said I have felt bad for saying.
Y’layna rolls her eyes standing up.
Y’LAYNA BRYANT: Devil in disguise? You took the absolute most mortifying thing that could have happened to me. I came to my best friend about something in confidence and you went and threw my business into the streets and blogs. You spoke of me to the blogs like i was a diseased dog on the streets, yet when you were in the hospital clinging to your damn life , i was the first one there. And you wanna talk about playing victim!
MERCEDES: I can understand the frustration and the hurt coming from Y’layna.
LONDON CARTER-KING: And she’s not the only one hurting, I refuse to feel bad for a person who played the same role as I did. Friends go through their issues and real friends fix the problems and move on, acknowledge your wrong doing and maybe we can fix this.
Y’LAYNA BRYANT: Honey then maybe we never were because you won't acknowledge anything that will make you look bad.
MERCEDES: I must say the fact that you two went into business together may be the reason why you have the issues going on right now.
LONDON CARTER-KING: Oh it definitely was, which is why I stepped down. I wanted it to be known that I didn’t want our friendship to suffer anymore but after the third season when the issue happened again I was done completely.
Y’LAYNA BRYANT: Yet you kept coming back! No one asked him to come back. Not even in a negative way but the show has survived without him. So no one was banging down his door for him to come back. As you can see we have even franchised to a new city. Our ratings never slipped when he made his dramatic exit every season. It became predictable.
MERCEDES: Done with the friendship?
LONDON CARTER-KING: Yes! I figured I would just love from a distance. I just knew that after that moment our friendship changed because I saw the lengths she would go to to advance herself.
MERCEDES: Both of you are hurt, I can tell. I guess it was best that London did leave and Y’layna took less of a role with the show because If things would have stayed the same then maybe you two wouldn’t be able to sit here today.
LONDON CARTER-KING: I mean I honestly did her a favor, especially when production called me regarding a return to the show. I figured I would come back to a better setting but once she got word of the issues between Anthony, Levi and I. She had her story for the season and ran with it, I wasn’t missed? but I was the main controversy for the whole season. It just doesn’t make sense, if we’re going to sit here and do this then be real.
Y’LAYNA BRYANT: And there's the other problem right there. maybe because I've never been a celebrity. I've only represented them. But I've never understood their obsession with being the talk of the town. London has always made it clear that he was above the show yet came back season after season. Because let's be real. London want all over the scene anymore. He wasn't wrestling anymore. The life was his main gig. And he was willing to do whatever it took to make sure he kept it. As you have seen other people do in the show. I literally have nothing to do with the storyline. Anyone who really knows the business would know that. And maybe that was my problem. I went into business with someone who was more interested in his rise back to fame rather than putting together a good show.
LONDON CARTER-KING: I don’t need wrestling or reality tv for any of that when I have multiple brands outside of those careers. Y’layna could barely keep her company running and if it wasn’t for the show I created she wouldn’t be sitting here today. Let’s check her resume of failed clients she had and what else has she accomplished besides producing a reality show that I helped her with? Don’t try and belittle my accolades when yours don’t look so pretty either, I’ve done nothing but showed support for all her failed endeavors and all of the ones she’s completed so again let’s be real.
MERCEDES: I can see we aren’t going to agree on this, and it’s getting way to heated out here so we need to take a break.
BACKSTAGE
The scene cuts backstage where London and his husband Anthony are shown.
LONDON CARTER-KING: I already don’t want to go back out there and Mercedes can see us both getting annoyed. I swear that girl can lie very well!
ANTHONY KING: Chill Lon, it’s almost over.
LONDON CARTER-KING: I told Brooklyn this wasn’t going to be a good idea, I don’t want to talk about this shit and then she keeps bringing up the abortion like I haven’t already said sorry for that, oh boy London is the big bad guy again.
ANTHONY KING: That’s your friend yo, you gotta be more understanding out there instead of so defensive.
LONDON CARTER-KING: Ha, was.
The scene fades to Y’layna’s dressing room. She'd is shown having her makeup touched up.
Y’LAYNA BRYANT: This is what i did not sign up for. I Knew this was just another scheme for London to gain some sort of relevance why did we have to do this on tv? Don't worry, ill wait? Because a real friend would have called me over three phone and said let's meet up. Chiiiiile. This is giving much.
The scene cuts back to London and Mercedes just on the stage.
MERCEDES: Now both of you get your own little private segment, once I’m done with you and her then I will sit you two back out here together.
LONDON CARTER-KING: This is draining.
MERCEDES: I really wanted you two to come out here and actually talk and kind of come to terms with what happened.
LONDON CARTER-KING: She doesn’t want to look bad, I get that. She has this fake image she wants to uphold and it’s never been a good look. The one thing I will say about her is she is about her money and will do anything to get it, desperation is a disease just like jealousy.
MERCEDES: So you’re saying she is desperate and jealous?
LONDON CARTER-KING: Im saying she’ll do anything for a coin even if it does bring drama and pain to a friend or close one.
MERCEDES: Well I want to switch gears a bit and talk about something else, we can get back into you guys relationship once I bring her back out later to join us. But last season of #thelife you actually quit the show, came back and then disappeared again. Why come back?
LONDON CARTER-KING: Because the show has a special place in my heart, last season was really the first time I officially quit. The other times I just refused to film with certain people and only threatened to leave the show. When I quit this season I really did quit, the only reason people saw me was at Brandon’s wedding and that’s only because he asked me too. If you ask Brandon I refused in the beginning but me and him are REAL FRIENDS so why wouldn’t I be there for him?
MERCEDES: Why did you quit?
LONDON CARTER-KING: I felt setup again, now you’re bringing in someone I dated back in College and he’s flirting with me on camera, like why would you even bring this person into this situation knowing what I just went through the season before. I just felt like they gave no fucks about my feelings and at that point i felt way to disrespected so I left.
MERCEDES: Are you and Ryan still friends?
LONDON CARTER-KING: Yes Ryan is a friend of mine and we still talk. After being on the show Ryan saw the messiness behind the scenes which is why he stopped filming himself.
MERCEDES: Did he also blame Y’layna and quit the show?
LONDON CARTER-KING: No, Ryan never quit the show, he just decided not to film with certain people or be involved in scenes.
MERCEDES: How are you and Anthony doing? I love you two together so much.
LONDON CARTER-KING: We’re great, I love him so much and the love grows stronger everyday. He’s busy working with his music while I’ve been doing the whole motivational speeches in different communities and colleges.
MERCEDES: Tell me a little about that, how did the whole speeches come about?
LONDON CARTER-KING: I just wanted to do more to help, especially in my community so I try and you know talk to the kids or adults tell them my life experiences and let them know ways of how they can be successful in life. I’ve met some good people doing it and it makes me feel good know that I’ve helped someone else especially someone with a struggle.
MERCEDES: That’s excellent, what else? What about wrestling? Will we ever see you step back in the ring?
London pauses, a smile brushes across his face.
LONDON CARTER-KING: Everyone asks me that and I always say “You never know.” I’ve thought about it but I have so much going on outside the wrestling ring I just don’t think I would have the time but I do miss the ring. So I’ll say again you never know but as of right now no time soon.
MERCEDES: Can you tell us what’s going on with the LA and MIA franchise and why the two were combine?
LONDON CARTER-KING: Funding for the show was a huge issue, I mean we had people using personal money to fund the project. MIL Network was still new and #theLIFE was the only show on the network. The show became a huge hit so once funding got better most of the cast lived in LA anyway, I think President and I were the only two living in Miami so it just made sense. But originally it should only be two franchises and that’s LA and now ATL. But LA/MIA has ran it's course, it was hard to cast people for the show and with all the strained relationships it was just hard to film and keep everyone in the same room without an altercation.
MERCEDES: Any chance will see you on ATL? I heard a few people from LA may show up since the franchises ended.
LONDON CARTER-KING: No I am completely done, but I am doing a MIL Radio special for ATL but as for being on the show, no!
MERCEDES: Is it true that some of the LA cast may show up?
LONDON CARTER-KING: I honestly couldn’t tell you, I don’t really get involved with the behind the scenes stuff anymore but I mean if it happens it might not be a bad thing. I think everyone who has ever appeared on the show has brought something different but in a positive manner. I understand we had our issues but we made a good show.
MERCEDES: Do you think you and Y’layna could ever work on another project or continue business together?
LONDON CARTER-KING: As you can see that’s not a good idea at all so probably not. We both have different views on how a personal and professional friendship should run and I just don’t want our friendship to get worst. As for business I mean unless one of us gives up our share of #theLIFE or MIL then I guess we’ll always in business but as for new ventures that’s out.
MERCEDES: What about a family London? I know Brooklyn has two beautiful twin boys but where are your kids?
LONDON CARTER-KING We’ve talked about it, but it’s just not happening right now. I want us to really grow in our careers and brand before we start a family. But don’t worry it’ll happen soon!
MERCEDES: Well London thank you, I’m going to bring Y’layna out for her one on one but I’ll see you out here shortly.
London smiles as he exits the stage.
MERCEDES: Now before I bring out Y’layna Bryant, this is where I announced this week's HATER OF THE WEEK and this week is special because it’s a double whammy. I’m dedicated it to tonight’s guest so yes the HATERS OF THE WEEK are Y’LAYNA BRYANT and LONDON CARTER.
The crowd gasps
MERCEDES: I know you guys are probably wondering why I chose them because I am friends with the both of them but I just hate to see the two struggle in their friendship since it’s history there. I want them both to really fix it and go back to what they use to be and that is the reasons I crowned these two the HATERS OF THE WEEK.
The scene pans backstage. Y’layna is shown exiting her dressing room to make her toward the stage. She and London brush past each other as she makes her way to set. The two don't acknowledge each other. As Y’layna reaches the set, Mercedes welcomes her back with a smile. She takes her seat.
MERCEDES: Welcome back Y’layna.
Y’LAYNA BRYANT: I thank you.
MERCEDES: So we've had some time to clear our heads and calm down. Reopening these wounds is definitely difficult
Y’LAYNA BRYANT: mmhmm. We have been best friends for years. I'm still so baffled that things got this sour over a business move.
MERCEDES: Do you believe the show alone is what caused the demise of your relationship.
Y’LAYNA BRYANT: Absolutely. I mean before that we were great. Little small stuff here and there, of course, but that's friendship. Things like that happen. But when they say it's not always a good idea to go into business with your friends or family. They were certainly onto something.
MERCEDES: Why in your opinion did the partnership go sour?
Y’LAYNA BRYANT: Any person who has ever had the pleasure of working with me, absolutely knows that my business life and my personal life are always one hundred percent separate. My life has never played out on camera because there never a need for it to. London has always been a store, even before he was, he just was. And i was comfortable being behind the scenes . That's where my passion was. But he doesn't realize how all of this has forced my life into the limelight. Why is it that “The Life Producer, Y’layna Bryant aborts baby” splashed on the cover of people magazine? That was a devastating time in my life. And he was the only one who knew. Because he was my best friend. But to get a buzz, you used MY life for your career gains. I was devastated.
MERCEDES: You mentioned that you were not a part of the process in bringing in people from London's past, but he seems to feel strongly that this was a part of your business move to keep ratings.
Y’LAYNA BRYANT: If you are willing to put out that kind of personal information out about me, why is it hard to believe he won't do the same for himself? Why do you think we're hashing out our personal issues on national t.v. this is doing nothing for career. This is not bringing me clients. But it is making him famous. Come on now! I'm not gonna keep defending lies.
MERCEDES: Do you regret doing the show?
Y’LAYNA BRYANT: One hundred percent…. Absolutely. If I knew then, what i know now, we would not even be at a 6th season. This is why I have essential become an invisible producer. No matter what has happened, as a businesswoman, just cutting thes show would be foolish. The cast started with four people. Look at this upcoming season. Its massive. This has never been fine on reality tv in a setting that was not a game show. We are literally breaking records. But at what cost?
MERCEDES: Was the decision to cancel the LA/Miami franchise a mutual decision?
Y’LAYNA BRYANT: It was. It had gotten out of control to be honest. Problems stemmed off camera with most of the cast, and we don't want to promote violence. Yes people get angry, but most of them couldn't sit in a room without going to blows.
MERCEDES: Now let's switch gears a bit to something more positive. It seems as though you've crossed over into the music industry.
Y’LAYNA BRYANT: I have. I've recently signed a few artist to my agency. I room a bit of a break because i was kinda in a rut. But after taking that time off, i wanted to jump back in and friend of mine, Katch, y'all might know him, came to me because contract was up, and he was looking for new management and i just thought why not jump in with a whole new project. And it's been fun. Definitely.
MERCEDES: Is that how you met this new beau of yours we have been seeing on your arm?
Y’layna chuckles, blushing.
Y’LAYNA BRYANT: It is. We met at an industry party actually and kinda just hit it off. Right now I'm just enjoying his company, seeing where things go. I'm definitely happy.
MERCEDES: Now will we see you back in the wrestling industry?
Y’LAYNA BRYANT: Time will tell.. I definitely wont say i don't see it in my future. Signing wrestlers opened the doors of YL Management so we'll definitely see
MERCEDES: Well it’s time to bring a London back out so we can find a resolution and move forward.
London makes his way back out to the stage joining Y’layna and Mercedes.
MERCEDES: So what happens next? I think you two were able to communicate and share your feelings about each other and you have to admit ten plus years is a long time just to throw away a friendship.
LONDON CARTER-KING: I love Y’layna and will always hold a special place in my heart from her. Besides this business venture we’ve never had an issue and even before this interview we were cordial. It’s not issues on my end with her and I would hope she would feel the same.
Y’LAYNA BRYANT: We go so far back, beyond all of this. I could never just throw that away. As many nights as i say back and wished I could, I know that's not reality. I don't hate him. I just know we need time, if we're ever truly going to get back to us.
MERCEDES: Anything else you would like to get off your chest?
London turns and looks at Y’layna, he extends his hand grabbing her hand.
LONDON CARTER-KING: I understand that I have hurt you in the past with comments I’ve mad about you and your private life and I sincerely apologize for that because I understand that may have been damaging emotionally and professionally. But as for feeling the way I do about being setup and forced In situations I wasn’t cool with that won’t change. But as for a friendship I mean we’ve shared years and I know we can move passed that. And I’m willing to do that.
London let’s go of Y’layna’s hand. Y’layna wipes a tear from his face, and smiles.
Y’LAYNA BRYANT: I want you to look deep into your heart and realize that I would never do intentionally do anything to set you up, so i can truly apologize to you if you felt that I did something to make you feel that way. I want us to move past this and I mean really move past this. We have too much to lose if we don't.
MERCEDES: Wow that was sweet London, Y’layna what’s going through your head right now?
Y’LAYNA BRYANT: It felt good. Ive needed too hear that for a very long time.
MERCEDES: I wish you two the best and I know for a fact that you two can jump back in and make it work. Before we close the show let’s hug it out.
All three stand embracing each other, music starts to play. Mercedes faces the camera.
MERCEDES: Thank You Everyone and join us next week for an explosive show and a surprise guest. Later!
The scene fades.
