Behind #theLIFE Philly: Key Norwood
Friday January 12, 2018
Downtown Philadelphia
The scene opens inside of Infusion Lounge.we pan around the club showing some people at the bar ordering drinks before panning to the main stage. A crowd of people are shown crowded around the stage giving and dancing to the performer. We finally reveals Up and coming Philly rapper, Keyden Norwood, more notably known underground and throughout the city as Keyz. The crowd bumps as cheers as he owns the stage. As he wraps up his set, the crowd applauds himself. He thanked them and makes his way back to his way off the stage into the crowd.
Yo. Shit has really been popping off for ya boy… oh before I jump the gun, I should probably introduce myself. I’m keyden. But everybody calls me keys. When I was in high school, I used to sell answer keys to tests and shit. Always was a hustler. And since my name was Keyden, it just stuck. I guess you can say I grew up somewhat privileged. My mom, who’s Japanese is a doctor. And my dad, who’s black is one of the biggest real estate agents in the city. So needless to say, we was caked up. But my mom and dad lived two different lifestyles and both of them wanted me to follow down their footsteps.
But I had different plans…
I’ve known I wanted to be a rapper since I knew what a rapper was. And it wasn’t nothing nobody could do to make me change my mind. Right now everybody got their eyes on uzi but I’m tryna be up next. And I been grinding my ass off to make sure it happened.
But shit has been a lil rough for me tryna break into the industry because I was involved in a lil media scandal where this trans girl called herself tryna expose me. I ain’t never been one to hide what I like but I did prefer to be a lil discrete because somebody once told me “gay don’t pay”. I don’t consider myself gay but I have accepted the label bisexual because no matter how you spin it, the woman I’m attracted to aren’t viewed as women by most of society. And most people ain’t taking you serious if they know you in that life..
My first experience with a transgender woman was when I was 16. Saw this bad joint when I was walking in the gas station. I mean real Bad! So I did what any normal hiring ass teenager would do. I pushed up on it. She took me to her car and I won’t go into too many details, but you know how it goes. But then after, she told me what it was. And of course I was mad as fuck at first. Wanted to kill that bitch. But she knew how to handle the pipe like nobody I ever had. And plus I lied to her too. I looked older, so I told her I was 19.
Shit made me curious after that so I started to find myself looking at the porn. Then I would start meeting up with em. I won’t lie. I even paid a fee sometimes. I had the money and some of these women wasn’t putting out for free and I needed my fix so it was nothing. It was always physical at first. I would catch the top. And that was it. But then I met this one chick, Remy. She kinda turned me out. She kinda showed me the real side to the lifestyle. She wasn’t like the fantasy that most trans girls sell. She was just a real woman. She was classy. But a freak. She made me wife her. And I been wifing her since 2014. My family don’t know, but one day I wanna introduce her and bring her into my life. But I gotta explain my life to them first. And I don’t really know how to do that right now. And with this music thing, right now just don’t seem like the time to be outing myself to the world. Luckily aren’t was real understanding about keeping our relationship on the low. But I don’t know how much longer she gon take it either. It’s all just so much. And a lotta times I just be wanting to say fuck it and stop trying. But the music drives me man. That’s all I can focus on.
After Keyz gets off the stage he makes his way through the crowd, stopping to interact with a few people who liked his set. He then makes his way to the vip area. He is greeted by New York rapper Drake Andrews. The two dap each other up before taking a seat.
DRAKE ANDREWS: what’s good man? You did ya shit on the stage man.
KEYDEN NORWOOD: Respect man forreal. I’m just glad you could take some time out of your schedule to come see me perform.
DRAKE ANDREWS: Yo. I told you before. You it man. You definitely got what the game needs to see. People don’t believe me when I’m saying I randomly be searching SoundCloud and shit, tryna see what’s out there.
Key chuckles
KEYDEN NORWOOD: Man I thought it was a joke when you hit my line.
DRAKE ANDREWS: Nah man I heard that “True story” shit man I straight hopped in the studio and wrote a verse for it. I knew I had to sign you before somebody else did.
KEYDEN NORWOOD: oh you gotta let me here that forreal.
DRAKE ANDREWS: how bout we record that shit. Drop a remix.
KEYDEN NORWOOD: you would do that?
DRAKE ANDREWS: I’m serious about my artists man. Anybody I work wit will tell you. I’m bout seeing everybody win. I’m only as good as the artists I sign right? And that shit is good. If you wit it. I’m wit it.
KEYDEN NORWOOD:Ain’t no question. You just say when.
DRAKE ANDREWS: ASAP most definitely.
KEYDEN NORWOOD: Yo. Can I ask you something
DRAKE ANDREWS: what’s good man?
KEYDEN NORWOOD: how did the industry treat you when they found out you were bi?
DRAKE ANDREWS: I mean of course niggas was shifty at first. But real niggas respect the artistry. They know when I’m in the stu, I’m bout the music. I’m making Grammy award winning hits. I’m working with the biggest artists in the industry. Couldn’t deny me if they tried.
He pauses, shaking his head.
DRAKE ANDREWS: But don’t get me wrong, it’s a lotta times I gotta fight ten times harder than niggas that don’t hold a candle to me. But this is what I love. So I had to ask myself was it worth it. As in the end it was. And look at me now.
KEYDEN NORWOOD: I’m tryna get like you man forreal. You seem like you got it all together.
DRAKE ANDREWS: I wouldn’t say that. But I got a family to feed. I can’t afford not to be great. And if this is what you really want. Imma show you the way. But you gotta grind my guy. I know you got it in you. So don’t think about what society is thinking about you. Think about why you’re writing these bars.
He pauses, taking a shot from his bottle of Hennessy.
DRAKE ANDREWS: I heard about that Lil mediatakeout shit. How much truth is in them articles.
Key sighs, looking down to the ground.
DRAKE ANDREWS: We ain’t gotta talk about it. I understand.
KEYDEN NORWOOD: I just don’t want that to have anything to do with my music.
DRAKE ANDREWS: Unfortunately we can’t escape that. When you’re in the public eye, everything you do is gonna be picked apart. Better you learn how to deal with it now before it gets to hard t handle. You ain’t tryna go out like Bobby V huh?
They both chuckle. Drake pours another shot and offers one to key. He takes the shit and the two toast.
DRAKE ANDREWS: Man fuck all the outside bullshit. To the music man.
KEYDEN NORWOOD:To the music man.
The two throw back their shots as the scene fades.

The scene opens up inside of Key’s house. He is shown walking to his front door. When he opens it, Remi Brooks is shown standing on the outside of the door. Key invites her in and pulls her in for a long hug. He then kisses her on her forehead as she embraces him back. He closes the door behind them and escorts her to his bedroom.
KEYDEN NORWOOD: How you been bae?
REMISHA BROOKS: I’ve been good. Missing you. I feel like I never see you anymore.
KEYDEN NORWOOD: I know baby. Shit I been busy as doc since I signed this contract. That’s why I called you over though. Cuz I wanted to spend some time with you.
REMISHA BROOKS: Keyden…. it’s 130 in the morning. As happy as I am to see you, couldn’t you have wanted to spend time earlier. It seems like lately you’ve only been calling me after hours and I already told you I’m not that girl.
Key sighs sitting on the bed, next to Remy.
KEYDEN NORWOOD: Yo chill. You know it’s not like that. I just signed with a really good label ma. And then i got this show. Babe this is everything we’ve been talking about. I’m just tryna follow my dreams so I can take care of us.
REMISHA BROOKS: Keyword… US Keyden! I’m happy you’re following your dreams but I don’t feel like I’m apart of them most times. The deeper you go into this dream. The further from me you seem to get.
KEYDEN NORWOOD: Remy! Yo chill. Forreal! I’m not going nowhere babe. I’m just tryna sort shit out! I need you to be patient with me. I’m just tryna pop off forreal and when I do I’m taking you everywhere I go and that’s fact. Can we just enjoy this time babe. You know I gotta fly out to Cali for this event in a few hours.
REMISHA BROOKS: And am I coming with you on this little trip?
KEYDEN NORWOOD: Next time babe.
REMISHA BROOKS: of course
She rolls her eyes
KEYDEN NORWOOD: Bae if I take you with me we gonna argue cuz imma be working the whole time. And you’re gonna be in the hotel mad. I need to focus on these gigs babe.. can you stop acting like this? You need some of daddy?
He leans in kissing her. She pushes him away.
REMISHA BROOKS: Boy bye!
He chuckles as he leans in kissing her again. He lays her back on the bed and looks into her eyes.
REMISHA BROOKS: See you think you’re slick!
KEYDEN NORWOOD: You like it though.. so stop playing and give me something to miss when I leave.
He smirks as she kisses her on her neck. She chuckles and kisses him as the scene fades.
