The scene opens up in Malibu, California at Marcus Kain beach house, inside Marcus is shown sprawled out across his king size bed along with two half naked females laying beside him. Marcus awakens from the vibrations of his phone and notices the missed calls from Mercedes. He looks over st the females shaking his head, pushing them trying to wake them up.
MARCUS KAIN: Ayo, get up. Y’all got to go!
STRIPPER 1: What?
MARCUS KAIN: You heard me yo, y’all was suppose to be left.
STRIPPER 2: That’s rude.
MARCUS KAIN: No what’s rude is you blowing that hot ass morning breath in my face. The maid will help you out!
MARCUS KAIN: Yo what up world? It’s ya boy Marcus Kain, one of the realest niggas you’ll ever meet in your life and that’s facts. I’m staying out Malibu right now until my crib is ready out LA so while I wait I’m just going to chop it up here, make some fun, and you know have some fun with a couple bad shorties around the way.
Marcus laughs while rubbing his hands together.
MARCUS KAIN: But my main shorty was outside and these chicks needed to go.
The scene cuts back to Marcus and the two strippers, he continues to rush the two to get dressed and leave but before they could finish Mercedes already enters the room.
MERCEDES: I should have known this is why you weren’t answering your phone.
Mercedes shakes her head as she walks further into the room, she watches the two girls grab their clothes and the rest of their items and the maid escorts them out of the room.
MERCEDES: Really Marcus?
MARCUS KAIN: You were suppose to call Alicia.
Mercedes walks over to Marcus showing him her phone.
MERCEDES: I called you six times and I knocked, luckily the maid heard me and let me in. You are being way to messy right now.
MARCUS KAIN: Did you come over here to scold me or to talk business?
MERCEDES: Well it looks like I’m here to do both. I almost got in my feelings witnessing this whole thing but I won’t allow that to happen.
MERCEDES: Hey World, it’s Alicia Matthews aka Mercedes, Grammy award winner, 6 platinum album, business woman and a former badass wrestler. I also have 3 beautiful kids, Sarah who actually is my oldest, and then Joshua and baby Drexel so yes I’ve been pretty busy.
Mercedes smiles.
MERCEDES: I came to see Marcus today because we both were offered a business opportunity that I personally think we shouldn’t turn away, Marcus on the other hand wants to be difficult and make things complicated. Now if you don’t know, Marcus and I were once highschool sweethearts, we had our issues but after awhile we finally decided to call it quits. Now don’t get me wrong I will forever love this man, but things will never change when it comes to him. As for doing business together and making some money, that was something we could accomplish together.
The scene cuts back to Mercedes and Marcus.
MARCUS KAIN: Come In Alicia, you know it’s not even like that.
MERCEDES: Whatever you say Marcus.
MARCUS KAIN: I told you I would leave all this alone if you just take me back but you trippin on some old shit.
MERCEDES: Well by the looks of it, seems like the old shit is still repeating itself in the future. But I’m not here to talk about that, let’s talk about this money.
MARCUS KAIN: I already told you I didn’t need to hear the details, I trust you.
MERCEDES: You don’t want to hear the details?
MARCUS KAIN: I already know your not going to set me up or put me in a bad situation so let’s forget about the business right now and talk about us.
Mercedes rolls her eyes as the scene cuts to her confessional.
MERCEDES: Marcus has been trying his hardest to get me back, but when I see him still messing with other women it makes me think he isn’t serious. I get were not together but if he wanted me back that bad then the other women wouldn’t even be in the picture.
Mercedes shrugs as the scene cuts back to the two.
MERCEDES: It’s nothing to talk about Marcus just let it go, I guess since your hoes are gone then we can go grab something to eat, I have time before I have to pick Drexel and Joshua up.
MARCUS KAIN: That’s fine, let me finish getting dressed and we can head to that new spot they just opened up.
Marcus walks pass Mercedes kissing her in the cheek, he makes his way into the walk in closest to start getting dressed and the scene fades and reopens in Las Vegas, Brandon Young•Andrews is shown making his way into a tall building that sits on the end of the strip. On the side of the building it reads Law Offices of Joelle Wright. Brandon takes a deep breath before he makes his way inside.
BRANDON YOUNG•ANDREWS: Today wasn’t a good day for me, I was on my way to speak with a lawyer regarding my options if I did decide to divorce Drake. I’m sure everyone knows our history, I mean if you’ve been following us the last five years then you’ll know that our relationship is filled with hate, drama, and infidelity.
Brandon sighs.
BRANDON YOUNG•ANDREWS: Now don’t get me wrong, I love Drake and I’m still deeply in love with him, but we’re just in a really bad place right now and honestly I don’t know what to do. After taking with my mother she advised me to seek out a lawyer, just to get some advice, and that’s why I’m here today.
The scene cuts back to Brandon walking into the main lobby, he walks over to the secretary and signs in. After sitting for about 5 minutes, Brandon finally makes his way in the back to meet with Joelle Wright.
JOELLE WRIGHT Brandon, Thank you for meeting with me
Today.
Joelle extends her hand and the two embrace with a handshake. Brandon sits down at the table.
JOELLE WRIGHT So what can I help you with today?
BRANDON YOUNG•ANDREWS: Well I came here today to discuss my options of a divorce. I’ve been with my spouse for almost six years now but we’ve only been married a year and a half.
JOELLE WRIGHT And your contemplating divorce already? Wow! Have you already filed?
BRANDON YOUNG•ANDREWS: No I haven’t, that’s what I’m trying to figure out if I’m going to file or not.
JOELLE WRIGHT I see, so you're still in the process of figuring out your next move. That’s understandable, usually people in your case struggle with filing or not filing.
Brandon shrugs.
JOELLE WRIGHT If I may ask, why is it that you want the divorce?
BRANDON YOUNG•ANDREWS: I just don’t trust him anymore, we’ve been back and forth for a couple months now and I even moved out of our NY and LA home.
JOELLE WRIGHT Are you guys seeing other people?
BRANDON YOUNG•ANDREWS: I’m not, but I can’t the same for him.
JOELLE WRIGHT Well a divorce can go a couple different ways, it all depends on if you guys have a prenup, and it also involves splitting up assets, properties and whatever else you two may co-own together.
BRANDON YOUNG•ANDREWS: I really don’t want his money, if I do decide to file then I just want what’s mines and that’s it.
JOELLE WRIGHT Then we shouldn’t have any issues when it comes to the divorce process. If you want I can gather some information from you, present you with some paperwork and if you do decide to file then we can go from there.
BRANDON YOUNG•ANDREWS: That's fine.
JOELLE WRIGHT Ok, I’ll have my secretary get you to fill out some information and then once your done, I’ll check it out and follow up with you in about a day or so.
Brandon smiles and gets up from the chair, the two shake hands and Brandon makes his way out her office and towards the parking lot as the scene fades and reopens in Miami, Florida at the Carter•West Household. Inside Brooklyn is shown chasing her twin boys around the house, Levi who has a paint brush and a spatula slides under the table
Dodging Brooklyn almost making her crash into the floor.
BROOKLYN CARTER•WEST: DAMNIT LEVI! Where did your brother go?
Brooklyn bears the giggles coming from her second child inside the close hamper sitting next to the basement door. She smiles as she creeps up to the hamper, she goes to open it but Levi jumps out from the side and scares her.
BROOKLYN CARTER•WEST: Okay, y’all got me!
BROOKLYN CARTER•WEST: As you can see I’ve been a busy person since the last time you saw me on your TV screen and I’m not talking about the BIG SCREEN, but tv in general. But yes ya girl doing movies now, acting on the small and big screen except this right here is real life.
Brooklyn sighs.
BROOKLYN CARTER•WEST: It’s been so chaotic in my household these last few days, with the kids in school and causing me a headache and August advancing in his path of greatness, I’ve just been a nervous wreck. Luckily my mom is here today to help me with some of the craziness, maybe I’ll get a pinch of sleep.
The scene cuts back to Brooklyn and the boys, she yells for them to start getting ready for bed and they do so. Sharon, Brooklyn’s mother makes her way out of the bathroom and into the main bedroom where Brooklyn is shown laying on the floor.
SHARON CARTER: Why in the hell are you lying on the floor?
BROOKLYN CARTER•WEST: All this money I spent on these carpets, they better be comfortable enough to lay on. But I was wrestling with the kids and was just laying here afterwards.
SHARON CARTER: Yes I heard y’all down here making all that noise, it’s getting late B they should be in bed anyway.
BROOKLYN CARTER•WEST: I know, but I rarely get to spend time with them so when I do see them, I try to make the most of it.
SHARON CARTER: I understand sweetie, I was the same way with you. Anyway what’s on your schedule for the rest of the week?
BROOKLYN CARTER•WEST: A couple promo stops for the movie but that’s about it, I know August wants to go somewhere, just us and the kids.
SHARON CARTER: That sounds fun.
BROOKLYN CARTER•WEST: He wants to celebrate after finding out the news.
SHARON CARTER: I bet, that’s something to celebrate. It’s a blessing actually!
BROOKLYN CARTER•WEST: Yea I’m just happy that’s over with, but I’m feeling a little guilty that Shark doesn’t know.
SHARON CARTER: Ugh, the devil himself. You shouldn’t feel guilty at all, the way that man did you after you guys broke up was horrible and he deserves this karma.
SHARON CARTER: I love my daughter but sometimes she can say some
Of the craziest things out of her mouth. I get she wants to be the bigger person but James Shark is so old news, she’s married now to someone more handsome and well put together.
Sharon shrugs.
SHARON CARTER: But it’s whatever because Brooklyn is going to do whatever she wants to do.
The scene cuts back to Sharon and Brooklyn.
BROOKLYN CARTER•WEST: I’ll think about it.
SHARON CARTER: There’s nothing to think about, that man treated you like shit after you two broke up, he even denied those beautiful twin boys and now your telling me you care about his feelings? Fuck his feelings!
BROOKLYN CARTER•WEST: You didn’t raise me that way.
SHARON CARTER: And I didn’t raise any fools either.
BROOKLYN CARTER•WEST: I get why my mother was concerned, but no matter what she says this was a conversation that needed to happen and it was going to happen.
The scene cuts back to the two.
SHARON CARTER: I’m going to go check on the boys and make sure they’re sleep but whatever decision you make Brooke I’ll support you, I just don’t want to see you get hurt or my grandsons.
BROOKLYN CARTER•WEST: I got this mom, trust me.
Sharon smiles, she walks over to Brooklyn and kisses her on the forehead and walks away leaving Brooklyn still in the living room but this she’s sitting up. Brooklyn looks over at a picture of her two boys and she begins smiling as the scene fades and reopens in West Hollywood, the scene fades to a local restaurant, a small one, but popular enough to be crowded on a daily basis. Outside the restaurant on the sign reads “Kings Stop N Eat”. The scene fades inside where Anthony King is shown standing behind the main bar, he wraps up with a customer that’s delivering for Uber Eats.
ANTHONY KING: What’s good World? I know it’s been a minute since y’all seen a nigga but you know how I do, live life but privately.
Anthony smirks.
ANTHONY KING: But nah on some real shit I do try and keep my life private but for some reasons niggas always seem to bring my business to light. But that’s cool because none of y’all niggas stopping my bag. As you can see I have my own little spot in the heart of West Hollywood and yes this place pops off every day and night. And yea you can catch me in here sometimes cooking and chopping it up with some of the customers. Today was one of those days, we had a couple people who couldn’t make it so I said I would cover those shifts, I asked my sister Madison to come in and help so we’ll see how that goes.
The scene cuts back to Anthony running around the restaurant, sitting people, serving food and taking orders, a couple minutes go by and Madison makes her way into the restaurant wearing a pair of sweatpants, a T-shirt and a pair of sneakers. She places her purse down on the table in the back and looks for her brother.
MADISON KING: My brother called me today and asked me if I would help him in his restaurant. Now at first I was thinking do I really want to mess these freshly painted manicure up but then I realized that that is my brother and when he needs me I’ll try my best to be there for him, plus we haven’t spent time together in a while and even though we’re working, it’ll be fun to work and hang out at the same time.
The scene cuts back to Madison, she finally spots her brother near the second entrance and she pulls him to the side.
MADISON KING: It’s so busy in here, like damn!
ANTHONY KING: It’s like this everyday. I had two people call out and my cook stuck in traffic.
MADISON KING: Bummer! Well I’m here now so I’ll help with whatever I can.
ANTHONY KING: London is coming later but he’s meeting with the adoption agency so he’ll pull up later.
ANTHONY KING: Yeah you heard that right, adoption! We’ve been thinking about it for some time now and we’re only at the beginning stages, no big moves have been made yet but asking questions doesn’t hurt.
The scene cuts back to the two, this time their both in the back preparing meals.
MADISON KING: Wait a minute, did I just hear you correctly? Adoption? Wow, congratulations.
ANTHONY KING: Thank you, but it isn’t official yet, we’re just asking questions.
MADISON KING: But even that itself is a huge step, let me know if you need anything, like recommendations or just support.
ANTHONY KING: I didn’t know how you would feel honestly.
Anthony turns and starts chopping up lettuce while Madison peels onions.
MADISON KING: I’ve always been supportive of your relationship, I just wanted you guys to get to a better place before you took that step because having a child changes everything.
MADISON KING: I was happy to hear the news and was happy to finally be an auntie. I just hope the two of them are ready,
I know I’m the past they dealt with some issues with their relationship but it seems like everything is good now.
The scene cuts back to the two, Anthony makes his way back out to the main sitting area and starts helping more guests. The scene cuts to the outside where a black Mercedes Truck pulls up to the front. London is shown inside grabbing his phone and hopping out of the truck.
LONDON CARTER•KING: Hey World, it’s ya boy London aka The Savage ha! And I’m back on your TV screen but this time in a better light because the last time y’all saw me it was a mess.
London rolls his eyes.
LONDON CARTER•KING: But this time it’ll be different, this time around I want y’all to see me in a positive light and how I really live my life, my family and everything that’s good happening in my life.
Not that fake bullshit or putting me in situation I don’t deserve to be in!
London shrugs, taking a sip of his juice.
LONDON CARTER•KING: I’m such a big kid at heart, anyway Anthony hit my phone and said he needed some help at the restaurant today and shit I was doing anything except running a few little errands and when my man need me, I’m there.
The scene cuts back to London walking into the restaurant, he smiles as he greets a few of the customers before making it to the back. He notices Anthony in the kitchen making fish and he walks over kissing him on the cheek.
LONDON CARTER•KING: That crowd is crazy, is it an event or something going on?
ANTHONY KING: I don’t know but I got mad people that didn’t show and some that are late, it was a huge accident on the freeway so niggas not here.
LONDON CARTER•KING: I’m here babe don’t worry about it, just tell me what I need to do.
ANTHONY KING: That's one thing I loved about London is that I can always count on him, me and this boy has been through the worst and today we still stand strong as one, that’s my nigga!
The scene cuts back to Anthony and London, Anthony rushes off waiting on one of the newer tables while London attends the front, they both continue working while Madison on the other hand is sneaking her way out the front the door, the scene fades and reopens in rapper/producer Drake Andrews’ LA home. Cameras catch a view of his driveway first stopping at a matte olive 2019 Mercedes G 550 SUV. It then passes a metallic black 2018 Rolls Royce Ghost. Cameras skip past the rest of the cars, giving you a quick view before going inside of the pad and into the master bedroom. Drake is shown sitting up in his California king bed. He yawns as he stretches his arms out in the air.
DRAKE ANDREWS JR.: Man that sleep was like that.
He reaches over to his nightstand next to the bed and grabs his iphone. He scrolls through all his notifications that he missed while he was sleeping
DRAKE ANDREWS JR.: Goddamn. I missed a lot. I'll get to this shit later.
He locks his phone and sits it back on the nightstand, before rolling the covers off of him. He climbs out of the bed dressed in his boxers. He slips on a pair of slippers that are sitting at the foot of his bed and walks over to his huge walk in closet. He walks over to the section of the closet where his sleepwear is located and grabs a Louis Vuitton robe. He throws on the robe and walks out of the closet and out of his room. He walks down a long hallway and stops at a door that is cracked open. He peeks in and sees two of his sons still sleeping in bed.
DRAKE ANDREWS JR.: What's good world. Its ya boy Drake. Some of y'all know me as one of the hottest producers in the game. I've worked with some of best artists in the industry, including the grammy winner and mother of my fourth child Mercedes. But that's another story.
He chuckles, shaking his head.
DRAKE ANDREWS JR.: But anyway. A lotta y'all also know me through my husband Brandon Young. Before this marriage. The only news y'all ever heard about me was my music, but lately you go on blogs and all you seem to see is negative shit about me, my kids, my family. Everything. Brandon signed on to do the life and it kinda made our real life hell. I wasn't even on the show outside of a few appearances here and there, but, him being on the show also brought our relationship to light. And of course because we don't have a perfect marriage when niggas needed dirt it was kinda easy for them being as though almost everything we did was filmed. Fast forward to today and i don't even know if I have a marriage anymore. Its been all over the blogs that Brandon goin around talking about divorce. We been taking some time apart. I mean he been living back in vegas. And i been here, but I didn't think shit was that bad. But I learned the hard way with B that what he wants, he gets. So if this is really what he wants, I guess i gotta give it to him.
The scene returns to his home. Drake is now it the kitchen with all four of his children sitting around the table.
DRAKE ANDREWS JR.: Aiight man. Whos ready for breakfast.
DRAKE ANDREWS III: Me! I want some french toast daddy!
DIAMOND ANDREWS: I wan pacake.
DRAKE ANDREWS JR.: You want pancakes baby girl. I got you! I guess I'm making pancakes and french toast. And what yall want.. huh!
Drexel bounces around in his high chair, banging on the little table.
DREXEL ANDREWS: Ce.. ooo
DRAKE ANDREWS JR.: Cereal? You want some cereal lil man?
DREXEL ANDREWS: Ce.. ooo!
He bounces harder, demanding his breakfast. Drake holds his arm up in surrender.
DRAKE ANDREWS JR.: Wooah! You got it lil man! I don't want no trouble.
Derrick: I wan cero too daddy!
DRAKE ANDREWS JR.: Aiight bet! You got it! Daddy got all yall aiight.
Drake gets started making breakfast for the kids.
DRAKE ANDREWS JR.: Despite what you may have heard about me, my kids are definitely the biggest part of my life. You got a bunch of niggas running around saying my kids ain't wit me and I ain't paying child support and whatever. But I aint never been on no type of papers with any of my baby mommas. I have full custody of all my kids, except lil drex, and that's cuz me and Mercedes got an agreement. And he's still here a the time. That's the reason I moved out LA. I wanted all my kids to grow up together. They might have came into the world under some crazy circumstances, but i wouldn't trade none of em. For nothing.
The scene returns to his home. Drake is now shown sitting at the table watching his kids eat. He laughs as he watches Drexel destroy the cereal in front of him. His cell phone vibrates in his pocket and he reaches down to pick it up. A picture of his best friend, Vixen Diaries’ Angelica Ward pops up on his phone. He accepts the call.
DRAKE ANDREWS JR.: What's goin on ma?
ANGELICA WARD: Hola papa! What's up love?
DRAKE ANDREWS JR.: Nothing much mami, feeding these rugrats. Bout to get them dressed and out the door so I can hit the stu.
DRAKE ANDREWS JR.: The streets been waiting.. And been waiting for the right time to drop my second album. I got all my artists out the way. They all got projects either already dropped or due to drop soon, so i been working overtime now on my own shit. I recently dropped one single off the album, Nobu. And it's doing crazy. We just shot the video last week so look out for it real soon. But now it's time for the next single. So I'm heading down to the studio today to wrap it up so i can drop it real soon.
The scene returns to his home.
ANGELICA WARD: I meant to thank you again for performing at my fashion show! Drake they loved it!
DRAKE ANDREWS JR.: Oh no doubt! You know i got you pickles.
ANGELICA WARD: But I really wanted to call you and talk about what i saw on this blog Drake! Divorce? Is it real?
DRAKE ANDREWS JR.: Man I know. It's looking that way. Everybody else seem to know more than I do.
ANGELICA WARD: You didnt know he was thinking about filing?
DRAKE ANDREWS JR.: Nah. I just thought he wanted some time to get his head together. I been calling him. But I ain't really been getting no response.
ANGELICA WARD: You gotta do more than call papa!
DRAKE ANDREWS JR.: Wutchu mean. He asked for space. I gave him space. So now im wrong for giving him what he asked for?
ANGELICA WARD: That's not what I'm saying Drake. I just think it might be wise to give just a little more effort. That's all.
DRAKE ANDREWS JR.: At this point, I don't really know what to do. I always give him whatever he asks for. So what more can be done. Obviously it's not enough. And I can't make nobody stay if they don't wanna be there. I gotta worry about my kids. That's first.
The scene returns to his home.
ANGELICA WARD: know you guys love each other Drake. Nobody can deny that. This is the first time I've seen you this way about anyone. I just don't think you should give up so easily.
DRAKE ANDREWS JR.: I'm not giving up. I'm just not pausing my life because he's in a bad mood. I'm not built like that. I gotta keep it moving for me and mines. If we gon work we both gotta want it. And if he ever actually answers the phone, then we'll know what he tryna do. Then i'll do what i gotta do, but until then, I can’t stress it.
The two continue chatting as the scene fades and reopens on the inside of Y Label, formally known as YL Management. Cameras zoom down a long hallway, up an elevator to the top floor. A young woman is shown walking toward the corner office. She knocks once on the door before entering. When the door opens, CEO, Y'layna Bryant is shown seated at her desk in the middle of a phone call.
Y'LAYNA BRYANT: We need to get this deal moving ASAP. No more of our resources will be made available until I have a signed contract. We gave your artist an ep and two music videos, both of which are in heavy rotation.
She pauses, listening to the response on the other end. She holds a finger up to the woman who entered her office, letting her know that she was wrapping up the call. She then directs her attention back to the call.
Y'LAYNA BRYANT: There is no better representation. A taste of what my label has offered you artist is already more than what he's gonna get in a year at any other label. You've done your research. You know this is where he needs to be.
She pauses, rolling her eyes as she awaits their response. Moments later a smile spreads across her face.
Y'LAYNA BRYANT: That's what I wanna hear! If you can have him sign today, I can have him in the studio by Friday, and press as early as next week.
She smirks as she snaps her finger as they reply
Y'LAYNA BRYANT: Great. Well get back to me. I'll be here till about 7 today. And if you cant reach me hear you have my cell as well as my assistant's. I look forward to hearing from you soon alright?
Y'layna wraps up her conversation and ends the call. She finally addresses the young woman who came into the office. She is now revealed to be Ylayna's personal assistant, Tamika
Y'LAYNA BRYANT: Hey girl. What's going on?
Y'LAYNA BRYANT: Hello, hello! It is the boss. Thw big lady in charge! I am Ylayna Bryant. I'm the founder and CEO of Y Label. I currently manage some of the hottest recording artists in the business, including the wild ass trouble maker Katch, and my baby, my boyfriend Majesty Montana to name a few. I do still manage all talent. But my main focus has been in music. After dealing with the wrestling world, u think I just wanted to switch gears and try something new. So of course I linked with my industry connects and created a money team. We breed chart toppers artists that will grow with the times and have longevity in the business. But outside of that, I've just been building this Ylayna empire. I closed down my original boutique and reopend Layna's in a larger venue. So I definitely haven't forgotten that passion in case anyone got it mistaken. I'm actually in the process of working with a separate team that will still be based out of Y Label. But their only focus will be styling. My clients won't have to outsource for stylist. We'll have it right at home. Okurr!
She snaps, flipping her hair
Y'LAYNA BRYANT: I've just been focusing on business and family to be honest. A lot of things have happened over the years. Some of which did end up in the blogs, but I try not to focus on those things. Those things dont bring me any checks, nor so they co tribute in any way to building this empire.
The scene returns to the office.
TAMIKA PORTER: Majesty called. He's stuck in the studio so he will be late for lunch. I checked your schedule and there was wiggle room so I adjusted your reservation.
Y'LAYNA BRYANT: That man will be late to his own funeral.
She chuckles.
Y'LAYNA BRYANT: That's fine. I'm still full from breakfast anyway. I can go later. Did Tony confirm our meeting next week?
TAMIKA PORTER: He did. He's bringing over Trina's revised contract. For the most part they were happy, tho she did have a few request.
Y'LAYNA BRYANT: What kind of requests?
TAMIKA PORTER: According to him it's nothing to raise eyebrows about.
Y'LAYNA BRYANT: Can you get him to send it to me early, so I can prepare.
TAMIKA PORTER: Done. Also your mother called.
Y'layna jokingly sighs.
Y'LAYNA BRYANT: Did she say what she wanted?
TAMIKA PORTER: She said something about the dinner party again.
Y'LAYNA BRYANT: If I have to tell her one more time! Lemme call her back. Do I have anything else today?
TAMIKA PORTER: Nope. You're all good till tomorrow at least.
Y'LAYNA BRYANT: Perfect! You're the best. You can actually head out for the day of you want. I just gotta finish up here.
TAMIKA PORTER: Yas! You sure girl. I ain't gonna do nothing but go plop down on my couch and catch up on scandal.
The two chuckle
Y'LAYNA BRYANT: I need to do the same thing! I love that show! But no, absolutely. I don't need to keep you around just because I'm dragging.
The two continue chatting as the scene fades and reopens in LA, Mercedes and her oldest child Sara are shown pulling up to an apartment complex.
SARA MATTHEWS: Today I finally got my mom to take me to look at some apartments and even though I could have went on my own, I wanted her to be around just for the support. I know she didn’t want me to leave home but I’m about to be 19, I work full time and I model plus I’m starting school to study medicine so having my own space is what I needed.
Sara shrugs.
SARA MATTHEWS: We’ve already looked at a few places but I have a friend who lives in this complex and I’ve always thought it was nice so I wanted to show my mom to see how she felt about it.
The scene cuts back to the two walking inside the complex, they speak with one of leasing the agents and the three walking off to look at one of the models. Mercedes admires the 2 bedroom 2 bathroom apartment while Sara is already imaging how she’s going to decorate.
LEASING AGENT: I’m happy you two love the place, I’ll leave you two alone to talk about it and then we can go from there.
MERCEDES: Thank you.
The leasing agent leaves the two alone, both Mercedes and Sara walk into the kitchen area and sit down.
MERCEDES: I already know you like the place so I’m not even going to ask what you think about it. I just don’t understand why you want to move out so fast, I mean your only 18.
SARA MATTHEWS: I’ll be 19 and I just need to. I’m starting school soon and I need my freedom, my independence. You worked hard for everything you have and did it on your own so I want that opportunity too.
MERCEDES: You sound like me at your age.
MERCEDES: Even though Sara was turning 19, she was still my baby. I had her at a very young age and giving her up for adoption was the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do, but her adoptive mother understood my story and I was blessed that she allowed me to have her back before she turned 18, but the fact she wanted to be on her own so fast made me sad.
Mercedes frowns.
MERCEDES: But I was passionate at that age, and honestly Linda did a wonderful job raising her until I took over. I trusted her to make smart decisions and to make sure she was successful at everything she does. And even though it was going to hurt me when she moved out, I had to let her go and spread her wings.
The scene cuts back to Mercedes and Sara.
SARA MATTHEWS: Mom trust me, I’m ready for this. And you know I’ll still be there to help with Joshua and Drexel, they can even come here.
MERCEDES: Oh I know, they need to be around their big sister. Well if you really want to do this then I’ll sign the paperwork, I’ll pay the first year but after that you are on your own.
SARA MATTHEWS: You really don’t have to do that, but thank you.
Sara walks over to her mother and hugs her, the leasing agent makes her way back into the room with papers and the scene fades.
